Navaranaq - Kuluk

Kuluk says: "This is a song about a tragic legend from Greenland. Since I was a child - I listened to the tale that moved me so many times. The Greenlandic band Aalut made a song about it in the 80's, and it is one of my favorite greenlandic songs.

This song is about a girl named Navaranaq who lived for many many years ago. Navaranaq is the most beautiful girl and was respected by her people. Her people and the foreigners lived side by side, with great respect to each other. The girl, Navaranaq worked for the foreigners and was the correspondence between the to parts. For her own entertaintment, she told both parts: "They are going to kill you all!".

"In result, the head-man killed the other head-man for the sake of a rumour. Navaranaq got caught by her lie and was dragged through the stones and mud, while her people ask her if she is still happy. She was then killed by her own people.

It may be a very disturbing tale for many people - but I grew up in Greenland - and this tale taught me to give respect to everyone and never lie in behalf of someone."

The Man And The Giant

An Eskimo Legend by Co Hoedeman 1975. A hunter is pursued, bound up and carried to a cave in this legend of a river and of how fog came to the land. The story is enacted by Inuit using katadjak or throatsinging. The audience is locked in an alien world of sights and sounds where human activity seems propulsed by primeval forces.
