Alaska is a land of extremes — near endless hours of darkness in winter, and the midnight sun of summer. It is also a place of isolation, even in the state’s largest city. Many things just never find its way north — musical trends included.

This, however, has proved advantageous for the Anchorage-based Whipsaws. While the popular musical styles of the moment get batted around like a tennis balls across the net of the Lower 48, The Whipsaws have relied on their own intuition (and the scattered records collections and obscure radio broadcasts they happen upon) to become a hard-driving rock band, albeit, one with some stomp and twang and the ability to mesh that with solid story lines and timeless tales.

“We’re kind of sheltered from what’s going on Outside,” explains lead guitarist Aaron Benolkin, who also plays steel guitar, banjo and sings. “Alaska has kind of kept us away to develop on our own, and we’re better off for it.”

The Whipsaws cast off the misguided music industry notion of categorization and, in true Alaska pioneer spirit, see boundaries as something to cross, not a place to get held up. Perhaps this is one of the most known 70s Greenlandic band outside of Greenland. However their first album still protects its mystery and in my opinion their first album is their best.

Somewhere it says "Sume's LP was an overwhelming success. In a very short time it was sold nearly 10,000 times to Greenland's 50,000 inhabitants. However, while Sume was the face of the old Greenlandic Renaissance, the people's rediscovery of their own culture and the grafting of that culture on to the wild beast of Rock'n'Roll, Nuuk Posse represents the new Greenland. Modern (and hyper-modern) as Nuuk Posse sound, they carry the traditional Inuit culture to a new generation -- for example old Greenlandic drum dance recordings have been sampled on their latest CD. Along with Nuuk Posse, other artists like Ole Kristiansen, Iisaavaraq Petrussen and the rock band Inneeruulat are experimenting to combine tradition with modern music. But from limited knowledge, it would seem that Nuuk Posse is leading the pack at present.

Artists such as Issarnerit and Sume sang about Inuit identity and made themselves present at many political gatherings. In 1973 Sume was actually the first Greenlandic band to release an album with Greenlandic songs in Greenland. The title of the album was Sumut which translates to where to as a reference to what the future of Greenlandic people and language should be. According to an interview done by Karen Mohr Sokkelund with Karsten Sommer, the first person to produce and record Greenlandic music, One of the goals of the project was to preserve the musical interest and musical life of a small country with a small number of people who speak their language.

Sumut was in fact a trend-setting album that inspired generations of young people to produce music in their own language in conjunction with a movement towards establishing a government-Home Rule-which is independent and functions primarily in Greenlandic. Born and raised in Kotzebue, Alaska, James Dommek Jr, the twenty-seven year old Alaska Native (half Inupiaq Eskimo, half German/Irish) moved to Anchorage at the age of fourteen. In and around that time, James slowly traded in his basketball obsession for music.

Dabbling in drums while in Kotzebue is where the bug was caught. Studying jazz drums and playing in the jazz band at Bartlett High School is where his musical world was hugely expanded.

Growing up listening to the classic rock and blues of his parents record collection and putting it through a 90’s grunge and gangsta rap filter, Dommek started creating his musical identity as a drummer.

It is not the first time that I present Nanook on this blog. In recent weeks, the band has been very busy in Greenland and Denmark. We almost had them for the 2011 edition of the Alianait Arts Festival in Iqaluit.... but that will have to wait. Below are videoclips from their most recent hits. Enjoy!

Sam Tutanuak - Utiqpungaa

Sam Tutanuak is from Rankin Inlet. His recent albulm "utiqpunga" (I have returned) was released in 2009. His only song written in English, "The three musician", co-written with his daughter Karen, has been on the National Aboriginal Music Countdown Top 40 for several weeks, and #1 for at least three weeks in September!

In an interview to Northern News Services, published July 7, "he said he's glad he kept his original CD at 90 per cent Inuktitut content, despite his hit song being in English. - "My main goal with Utiqpungaa was to reach the Inuktitut audience."

Uummat. Heart. These guys are from Aasiaat, the city of spiders, in the great land of Kalaallit Nunaat. Uummat does know how to rock the place. And if you feel the blues, they'll certainly get you in the mood.

When I asked Jenseeraq about what inspire them, he replied: "The inspirations that we get for the lyrics are very common. We write what we feel. Alot of the lyrics are about love and relationships. So our biggest inspiration is basically LOVE. But some of the lyrics are about some other stuff. Like, sorrow, betrayal, parties, drugs, alcohol, having fun, having a bad day. Well, the ups and downs of everything, the bad and good stuff of everything in this world."

The members of the band are Jenseeraq Olsen (guitars & vocals), Johannes Skarup (bass), Angutimmarik Petersen (guitars & vocals) and Ove Mørch (drums). They also play at times with Johannes Sigurdsen (guitars) and Hansinnguaq Lennert (lead vocals) from Aasiaat.

Frederik and his older brother Christian are from Greenland. They grew up in Nanortalik which is a small town in South Greenland, where their parents opened a music store called Atlantic Music ApS. The store moved to the capital Nuuk where Christian now has been working since 2002 after he stayed in Qaqortoq for three years (College).

Christian and Frederik learned to play the guitar from their father and friends when they were very young, and Frederik even participated on a cd when he was only 13 years old and they both played guitar in bands which sometimes played in places where you had to be 18 to enter. Their father usually approved so they could play concerts for the small quiet town Nanortalik.

In the year 2008, Ib Uldum and Martin Zinck became members of Nanook. Ib is from the island Qeqertarsuaq where he grew up playing music with different bands. He now lives in Nuuk. Martin is from Aasiaat, and has also played in different bands, through his youth and is also now living in Nuuk.

When they started recording their debut album in August, they decided to have a keyboard player as well, and Frederik already knew Mads Røn who was interested so he got involved pretty quick. It took about a month recording the 10 tracks for the album "Seqinitta Qinngorpaatit" which means "Our sun is shining on you".

Mikisoq H. Lynge asked "Underground - What is it and why the f... do we need it!?"

Because we, as inuit in Greenland and Nuuk, need (young) people who think different, out of the box, not set up like the rest of the system. People who are artists, musicians, painters, littérateurs, anything with a meaning and an urge to say it! (...) Musically we´re so refined and have a long tradition for folk (polka) music, and of course trad. inuit drum/singing, but we´re also influenced by the the world. (...) Good things start from the bottom, even music groups and genres do too! Keep up the good work and let´s keep underground until we´re too many. Then we´ll break and shake the foundation! :-)

Torluut replied (Lu):

I think some people in any society needs something more than the things the market gives you. Some needs music (or any cultural subject) that doesn't take you as a complete idiot. Some might need more to stimulate their senses, because once you get used to the complex side of things, you can't get back to the basics. It's just not the same anymore. Also, you develop your senses, so you can hear the difference between the marketfriendly products and the artistic side of things.
